Terms and Conditions of Business
"Terms and Conditions of Business" must be accepted prior to any work commencing.
For the avoidance of doubt, please read the following statement and submit the contact form at the foot of this page.
All Portable Appliance Testing will be carried out in accordance with the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) Code of Practice for In-Service and Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (4th Edition).
Any previous records of tests are to be made available, if possible, before testing begins.
A competent, or responsible person, shall be provided by the client to meet me, to advise on any site safety information needed, and any potential hazards, when working at the customer's premises and to also ensure the availability of appliances for testing.
I will accept no liability for injury, loss or damage for appliances that are made available, or are inaccessible, during the agreed testing/inspection period.
The client must ensure that any critical information, or data, has been protected, or backed up, prior to the start of the inspection and testing.
I have insurance cover for public liability and will accept no liability for the business interruption, loss of data or business information, losses to business related services or loss to business profits. I will accept no liability for injury, loss or damage for appliances that are found to be faulty before, or after, the inspection and testing is carried out.
I assume that the client understands the nature of the tests conducted on the appliances, and that the inspection and testing is carried out solely at the clients own risk.
IT Equipment (File Servers, Mail Servers Etc.)
Systems such as file servers, mail servers, network switches/hubs and telecommunication equipment will not be inspected, or tested, without the express permission of the client. In the case of this equipment not being able to be switched off, these items will receive a formal visual inspection only. The client shall ensure that any critical information, or data, has been protected, or backed, up prior to the start of the inspection and testing.
I will not attempt to shut down any IT equipment, unless express permission by the client is given. I will not undertake the reboot, or attempt start-up procedures of IT equipment. This will be the responsibility of the client.
Telecommunication Equipment, (PABX, ISDN boxes, etc.)
These systems will not be unplugged in order to be tested as they are supplied by the telephone companies, and once installed are rarely switched off. The appliances will receive a formal visual inspection only.
Memory or Programmable Appliances
Equipment such as video recorders, clocks, central heating system timers, and burglar alarms, etc. that lose their programmed memory when disconnected from the mains electrical supply, will only be unplugged and tested with the express permission of the client, and it will be the responsibility of the client to arrange for the reprogramming of this equipment, if necessary.
USB phone chargers and AC PSU’s
As there is nothing to test on these items, they should only be visually inspected. However, PSU’s with detachable figure of 8 cables are tested as class 2. PSU’s with cloverleaf power cords, it is only the cloverleaf lead that is tested, the PSU is not tested.
Access of Appliances
Equipment can only be tested if there is easy access to its plug. If the plug is inaccessible, for example behind heavy, awkward objects, then the equipment will not be tested.
All rooms, offices, buildings must be unlocked to gain access in order to test appliances. I reserve the right to charge a non-productive hourly rate, if there is a delay in rooms being opened or unlocked.
Repairs
Minor faults found during the course of the inspection can be repaired as I find them, and the appliance re-tested.
More serious faults will always be reported to the client/responsible person first.
Invoices & Payments
All invoices will be sent to a valid e-mail address in PDF format.
Payment is due within 7 days upon completion of on-site testing, or invoice, unless previously agreed in writing.
I accept payments by either cash, cheque, or BACS.
Test Results and Certification
The ownership of all test results, and certificates, remain my property until all invoices are paid in full. Upon receipt of cleared payment the test results and certification will be sent to a valid e-mail address provided by the client.

Information about Portable Appliances
Classification and Types of Appliances
The IET's Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (4th Edition) states that there are the following classes of equipment.
Class 1 Equipment
Has basic insulation, and relies on an earth for protection. This equipment will receive an Earth Continuity test, Insulation test. and/or PE Conductor test. Examples of Class 1 equipment are kettles, toasters, irons, microwaves, electric heaters, fridges, freezers, washing machines and tumble dryers etc.
Class 2 Equipment
Has supplementary/reinforced insulation and therefore does not rely on an earth for protection and is easily identified by the double square symbol on the rating plate. This equipment will receive an Insulation test and/or Touch Current test. Examples of Class 2 equipment are televisions, DVD players, lamps, power tools, hair dryers, etc.
Class 3 Equipment
Relies on protection from a SELV (Separated Extra-Low Voltage) supply, which is usually less than 50vac or 120vdc and therefore does not require testing. However the power supply should be tested.
Information Technology Equipment (IT)
Not manufactured to BS60950 will receive a "soft" earth continuity test of 100mA and an insulation test (at a reduced voltage of 250vdc) or a Touch Current test. Examples of IT equipment are computers, visual display units, printers and scanners etc.
Appliances with Detachable Cables
E.g. IEC cables should be tested as a separate item, and also tested attached to the appliance.
Note: PSU’s with detachable figure of 8 cables are tested as class 2, (1 item)
Types of Electrical Appliances
Electrical appliances can be categorised into the following types of appliances.
Hand-held Appliances
These appliances are intended to be held in the hand and include such items as a hairdryer, power drill, hedge-cutter, soldering iron etc.
Portable Appliances
These appliances weigh less than 18kg and can easily be moved from one place to another when in operation e.g. kettle, toaster, food processor etc.
Movable Appliances
These appliances weigh less than 18kg and are usually fitted with either wheels or casters to enable the operator to move the appliance easily when required to perform work tasks e.g. mobile compressor, power washer, oil filled heaters etc.
Stationary Appliances
These appliances weigh in excess of 18kg and are not provided with a means of carrying e.g. washing machine, tumble dryer, and chest freezer etc.
IT Appliances
These appliances includes such items as computers, mains powered telecommunications equipment, printers, plotters, photo copiers etc.
Fixed Appliances
These appliances includes such items as hand driers, bathroom heaters etc, designed to be fastened to a support , or otherwise secured in a specific location.
